As far as I know there is no law against it. But why would you want to with all the great beaches we have here?

It is well known that some of the treasure washed over the land and into the Indian River. There have been discoveries of spanish coins in the river. Then of course there was the payroll lost from Ft. Capron, although word is this is about 100% recovered. I have no idea just how many coins could be in there, several hurricanes could have moved coins into the river.

There is still a huge amount of undiscovered treasure off the beach, so I agree with Boatlode, why not hit the ocean or beach. If you were going to hit the IR, I would hit it at places adjacent to known spanish finds/wrecks or close to it.

I do the beaches as well but there are some spots im curious about. Plus everybody hits the beach not many people really think about possible finds in parts of the river.

One other thing the beaches around here I cannot dive with my detector because most are leased off because of ship wrecks so it illegal to enter the water with a detector.

There could be some good relics at the right spots. I think some of the posts on here of old US silver coins come from the Indian river but no one ever says it.

I'm just getting started in metal detecting but have lived in vero my whole life and have always thought it would be cool to try the river. Might see you out there in the coming weeks:wave:

I know a few who often river hunt in St Lucie, I know there is some legality on the area where the old fort was on the drive in fort pierce, and have hunted the river a number of times with a tnet pal. I would definitely wear some type of heavy soled water shoes, a lot of old oysters, broken bottles and other mess your day up items.

Edit
Disturbing the bottom of an estuary may have laws you want to check up on I'll leave it at that.
A lot of places will have no laws against metal detecting but there will be laws on disturbing the ground or bottom

Rivers can be quite complicated, so many laws & rules & regs on the various books those who should know can't even swim through it all with clarity.

I like to see the "outside the box" thinking... this leads to REAL discoveries... If I lived in Vero that river would have already been worked.
I think working the river is a great fresh idea... and more power to you who do it... sounds like pure adventure and I would almost bet ya find something...beings that river has had more history running around it than the beach ever did.

Bottom line it would be illegal disturbing the bottom it would also be illegal keeping anything older than 50 years.
Fly your pirate flag ..do what you like.... I don't give advice just like to pass info.
This is by no means a new thought.
If you want to find the law on it look up using the term "sovereign submerged bottom lands"...
P.S..... The state seems to have a tendency to assign the language "dredging" to even small material disturbances.

I was not referring to hunting under water... and it was mentioned earlier that there were no resrtctions in that location ... as far as "looking up the law" concerning the submerged lands act... I am VERY familiar with it beings I knew it was going to be passed BEFORE it was passed standing in Key West holding 20 lbs of Atocha gold (see avatar picture) at age 13 listening to Mel explain the new laws going to happen to us... as he offered me a job when I turned 18 so I could still do what I love...
which was to search/dive/recover shipwrecks.
I do not agree with the laws... but abide by them for one simple reason... it is law.
I am picturing him work the backsides and banks. IF permitted.
