If you think this sounds dangerous, you don't even want to know about a home made electrolysis setup, lol!

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, I don't care who you are that's funny!

Not sure where you're located, but if you're on the east coast there were a lot of British half pence that circulated around here.

Take that coin put it in a mug of HP, put it in the microwave defrost it for about four min/twice then when the fizzing stops do it again (change the HP), keep repeating it until it don't fizz. Then take a toothpic and as hard as you can scrap off what ever comes off. If it has any detail it will show up, if it doesn't it will not. Look at my last thread about my LC's and my IH's that is exactly what I did to them. On those threads you will see before and after shots and another thread titled 1865 my oldest IH

Oops, TH. I think you meant heat the HP first and THEN drop coin in, lol. He doesn't want metal in the microwave.

I hear you, but it doesn't do anything, as long as its not touching the sides. It heats up the coin. It works in mine. Theory is, they used to heat up the peroxide with a candle, with coin in pan. I wouldn't stear anyone in the wrong direction

Give the peroxide a try Mack:thumbsup: My first LC was also completely toasted but with a few very long peroxide soaks I was at least able to determine it was a draped bust LC..which made me even more upset:laughing7:

But alas..at least I solved the mystery!

HH,
Chris

Thanks for all the kind words and advice. I will try the peroxide method soon and will post the results.

One thing I left out, cleaning any coin lowers the value (I just have to have a date!)
