No. But I'm going to take the course very soon. From what I understand there are no dives required, only classroom and written exam. I've been swimming a lot and I dropped 25 lbs, so hopefully my air consumption will improve.

I'm also thinking about going for a Rescue cert.

Yes. I want to drop another 20. I swim with full footed fins that have much less thrust than the Jet Fins I use for diving, so I have to kick more.

What Scuba tank mixes do Scuba Divers use? ( Dive mag article)
Most divers use scuba tanks filled with simple compressed air (filtered and dehumidified). This is safe and standard within recreational diving limits – breathing other gasses or exceeding depth/time limits requires the use of specialised gas mixtures: primarily Nitrox, Trimix and oxygen.
What is Nitrox?



Nitrox, also known as ‘Enriched Air’, is a blended gas consisting of pure nitrogen and oxygen. The air we breathe normally is ~21% oxygen and ~79% nitrogen (with other trace gasses mixed in); Nitrox (generally) has an oxygen percentage between 22 and 40%.
Recreationally, diving with Enriched Air Nitrox allows longer no-decompression limits (although it restricts maximum diving depth due to oxygen toxicity) by reducing the amount of nitrogen your body absorbs, thereby reducing relative risk of decompression sickness vs comparable dives using scuba tanks filled with air.
Diving with Enriched Air Nitrox (EANx) requires special safety training, a scuba tank gas analyser and a scuba tank fill location with a compressor (and gas blender) capable of both producing and ascertaining the desired gas mixture.

What is Trimix?

Trimix is a mixture of 3 gases (nitrogen, oxygen and helium) used to increase depth limits and/or dive times. Whatever its percentages, this scuba tank gas mixture is exclusive to technical (decompression) diving: recreational divers do not use Trimix.
Scuba tank fill locations with Trimix-capable compressors must use a certified gas blender to prepare the gas mixture.
What is Heliox?



Heliox is a mixture of helium and oxygen used by technical divers on very deep/long decompression dives. It is not used by recreational divers.

Can you fill your tank with pure oxygen?

No! Oxygen becomes rapidly toxic at depth below 33 ft (20 ft for safety) – prolonged exposure to pure oxygen below a few metres can kill you. It is not an appropriate scuba tank gas mixture. Technical divers use pure oxygen on carefully-calculated decompression dives, but this is beyond the scope of recreational diving and should not be attempted. Oxygen is also highly reactive and can make other substances flammable. Safety training is necessary to work with pure oxygen.

250.....gets a bit dim after that.....you have to go to the drop off to go deeper with decent light otherwise it’s just like a very deep night dive...

Did you feel any narcosis? The deepest I've ever been was 150 in Bonaire, and that was when I was young and stupid. But I never experienced narcosis.

I start to feel a bit about 180 ( head feels warm ) then it progressively gets more noticeable as i go deeper.

At 180 I go into “Rote Mode” which is a rote of checking , How’s buddy, ( if I have one) air left, depth presently at, time gone, time left, back to checking buddy etc.......unless you get ultra disciplined at that depth you can easily let the narcotic effect get you in trouble, it does feel really good......

Don’t forget Mike, I used to take guests at Small hope bay Lodge in Andros once or twice a week to 185 ( their signature dive) onto a sandy ledge for a couple of years, so I built up a tolerance. I do know people who feel narked at 150......

Wow, that's scary. I remember reading in Shadow Divers that they started hearing "jungle drums" in their head that got louder as they went deeper.

There is a huge difference between my warm clear water deep dives and their very cold dark scary Atlantic diving.....

The Nitrogen narcotic demons really work on your brain as the surrounding environment gets tougher or more challenging....

I read Gary Gentile's book Deep Dark And Dangerous about diving the Andrea Doria. Not for me.

Same here. Shipwrecks usually occur in shallow water.

not just the navy, its a common practice in long term construction diving to do Surface deco in a chamber. done a couple of SUR-D pops , one of my buddys got bent on the big dig in the sound on a SUR-D pop
