I have four that all have their places. A Lesche Model 85 (great general purpose for shallow to 12").

An Oaklahoma Electronics digger (no longer available) that is 'da bomb in parks (doesn't look alarming and it cuts a perfect flap or plug).

A light prospector's pick (good in the woods & in the garden).

And a Dixie relic shovel for deep.

I've used the same shovel for 30 years . it's a WW-2 entrenching tool stamped 1943 download (2).jpg . I only hunt the woods so a neat plug or flap is not needed. when folded into the pick it cuts through roots very well . built tough and still going strong at 77 years old.

It really depends on where you are planning on digging if you are going to the city park you shouldn't be going in with a shovel, but if your going to the woods you don't want to be out there with a garden spade.

i make my own diggers. never rust or break and very durable. DSCF0002.JPG they are ss, 2 inch, 21/2inch ss tube 3/4 handles. blades are at 6'' and 8'' long so you know how deep to push. push one side in turn and push other side gives you a 2 1/2 inch plug 6'' long.

Same Lesche as Charlie P. (NY). When I am not using it for detecting it makes a killer tool for turning over or weeding the garden.
