Draped Bust, some early coins and relics.

Unfortunately, I have to accept the fact that the season is officially over. We had some serious snow fall followed by extremely cold weather. Both of them killed the last hope I had to be able to hunt till December, as I usually do. I still managed to get out for a few very short hunts before the conditions worsened.

Found eight early coppers, a couple of them were in a good condition.


Pretty happy with my best preserved Draped Bust LC (1803)


An other Spread Eagle Halfpenny (1814)


Tiffin Halfpenny (1812)


Also, found a few relics.

Two crotal bells.


A beat 31st of foot War of 1812 button


Barely visible Sappers and miners 1812


A nice gold guild civilian button


Decorated tombac


Copper floral brooch


A few buckles


Two timbles and I have no idea large brass item (probably from the early furniture)

Bravo! Excellent finds! Judging by this and other posts you have some great soil conditions up there! Do these come from fields where they used fertilizer? My spot where I've been hunting lately seems to be pretty harsh on copper coins, but the other day I got the best IHP I've ever dug. It's an old farm field that is now a forest. I'm thinking that it's probably the tree leaves / type of trees that cause the damage, because it seems to predate the use of modern farming methods.

I think your Draped Bust girl is one of the prettiest in terms of eye appeal , that I have seen posted here !!!

It's my best preserved Draped Bust. Usually they come out of the ground in a much worst state over here.

A really nice assortment of early finds. We got over 10 inches of snow and now we are looking at temps of 5 degrees.

Thanks. In my personal experience, the condition of the coppers depends mainly on how well the soil is drained. For this reason the rocky or sandy soils are usually better. It's the opposite for the Rev War pewter buttons, the longer the soil stays soaked, the better their conservation state will be. But of course, the use of the harsh chemicals and fertilizers will affect the condition of coins closer to the surface.
For the woods hunts the acidity of the soil will have an important impact on the coppers as well. Some types of pine trees will completely destroy any copper,pewter and even low content silver in the ground.
