Try it from about four inches away and see if it works better. High sensitivity can cause reflections around surface targets. I assume you ground balanced? Very unlikely it is the detector.

There could be junk in the ground that is blanking out the signal... Air test with the coil a couple feet of the ground...

I just got my new ATP the other day. I think something is wrong. I put a quarter in the grass sweep over it says 37-38 or sometimes nothing. The same with pennies and dimes. I've checked all coil connections.

Lowest sensitivity settings cause weak ID numbers. You need at least three bars sensitivity to get accurate ID numbers.
