I use vinegar & salt ...however before you do this it will also take the value down on coin but you will get rid of the crusty orange haze & it will return to its gray color...Oh & make sure you check it every 20 minutes as you dont want to over do it!

I dug one a while ago. you are lucky to tell it is a buffalo nickel in general. I would be pretty amazed if the date became visible. If it is that encrusted then it is a good bet the date and value are gone. I recommend you keep it as is. Much more interesting a conversation piece that way.
