I have over 3,000 plus detected hours on my baby- trac and I have used a variety of different battery's just to find out the very question you ask.
I have found that for the money, you can bet that the "Durracell max" is going to work out just fine for you. Target , Wal-mart usually have sales on them in the 24 packs for around 9-11 bucks.
I have found that the 8 AA pack standard e-trac load will last about 5 hours per hunt for 3 days. Not to shabby.
Don't store your battery's in the freezer or extreme heat...The freezer method to revive battery's is a myth. Although extreme heat will drain em much quicker. Store @ room temp.

Great thread~!

I have been getting about 8-9 hours on my rechargeable pack, and a lil less on the other one I have filled with rechargeable AA's
