I am curious about the buttons? What do the back marks say? Hope someone can chime in and id them. Civil war era? Anything civil war is a hard find in our area. Didn't get a chance to see the knife in person but its not a straight razor is it?

Did a little research of my own and both are general service buttons. Web site I was looking at said the Horstmann is post cw war. The Civil War Relicman Harry Ridgeway has a good website on late 1800's gen service buttons.

Gotta say I love the pics. I showed my wife the one of the guy (you?) walking the rows in the snow and wind and said "see, I'm not the only maniac!" That shot of the largie on the surface is great too, not like those staged shots of a nice clean coin on a muddy plug. I think I'd hit that place all winter. Just need a prybar and a mini-sledge hammer.

LOL!. When your finding 1830's - 70's coins and relics I don't mind being called a crazy person. Picture of guy in field is me (Helix). Sad to say looks like it was the last hunt till the spring, low temp of 10 last night. Good hunt to close out the year with. The picture is the LC just after kicking or pushing some dirt with my boot, how it was setting when I first spotted it. No one had touched it yet when the pic was taken. Neat to think human hands have not touched that coin in at least 150 years.

Nice buttons. Is that part of a horse bit?

That was the first thing that came to mind when he showed it to me. Some type of horse bit. Amazing how much stuff I have missed in past hunts at this site. I was all over this site at least 12 times in past years. Plow comes in turns the ground and its like detecting a new site, got to love the farm fields. I only wish old parks got plowed once and a while.

Nice variety of buttons man...the one (gilted) is an 1870's indian wars general service, the other civil war. I actually like the 1870's as I have dug far less of those.
