Hey everyone. It’s been a long time since I posted something here, especially with the COVID thing and all. We just started getting back to having yard sales here in Ct. Not a ton of them but enough to shake the dust off. I have a find that I’m a bit stumped on. I know a fair amount about certain antiques but cast iron isn’t one of them so I’m looking for some help. I picked up this nice older cast iron bowl for $8.00 at a sale today. It was at an older home and the fella said that he has never really seen one of these before. What is it? Besides a bowl! 🤪 I can’t find any reference to cast iron bowls. It does have a nice early gate mark. It has no handles and nowhere that might have had marks or a place for handles. The edges are clean as a whistle as far as a place where it might have been broken and repaired or replaced. I’m stumped. Any thoughts? Not having a handle I'm just gonna speculate that it was made to drop into an old cast iron coal stove top hot plate hole as a means to cook a stew, soup or whatever?

Thanks! I think you’re on to something there. That’s the closest thing I’ve seen yet. I couldn’t pass it up at $8.00.

I had this one authenticated by Professor Tomlinson, at SUNY Ulster, after I dug it up at a pre-Colonial site near Kingston, New York. It is dated from 1680 - 1720.:icon_thumright:
