Got back to the same site where I found the toasted 1695-96 William III Shilling, but the field just had been plowed with deep ridges, making it a little more difficult for me to swing around !

Anyways I still got a keeper, a nice knee buckle (dating around 1660-1750).
Also found another musket ball in the woods nearby and got the chance to see a magnificent bald eagle gliding over the field at about 20-30 feets of me ! No pics of the eagle sorry ;-)

I haven't looked up the buckle, so what makes you say French? (Just interested, as I've had similar)

That is a wonderful relic. I still get a smile from old, white roundballs too!

The seashell decoration, the french pottery found along it, the fact that the site I found it was found and occupied by French from 1650 to 1760.

here are some other French buckles : https://sites.google.com/site/archivesduforum/classique

This gets more interesting, many of those buckles on that site I find over here & I assumed they were manfactured here as well. I also know many of these are found all over Europe. So I wonder who manufactured what? Did we export lots of these or the other way around?

Problem is, my books don't focus on manufacturing sources & only look at type etc.

I think you are spot on with it being 1660-1720 & a Knee Buckle or small shoe buckle but I would like more info on different styles only being produced in 1 Country, or even being produced by us & then worn by the French.

If anyone out there has more info on manfacturing centres of these buckles including which type came from where that would be great - anyone please?

PS. all your other shoe frag bits are ones I've found before.

Although it doesn't help piece together where it was made, what were the clues on your Site, all French as well?

Can't help you with who made these buckles exactly, but I would love to see your buckles that are like mines, especially if they are complete !

thanks

OK, thats a shame, happy for anyone to wade in.

I had a quick scan of the hundreds of complete ones I had, & only saw one similar but not close enough to bother with a picture.
You may know that as a field hunter, the types you pictured are nearly always broken. I have an eidetic memory so I remember many of them but I only keep the complete ones. I have to draw the line somewhere, & pictured below is about 3 years worth that will be disposed of (sold) soon. I'm not going to dig through it, but you get the idea.

Because I only have a small image.
