Early morning hunt yields trifecta silver again; 2 rings and a 1943 "war" nickel
What a gorgeous morning out there today
Hunted 3 1/2 hrs. following the low tide out and back in.
Found an antique spoon marked "SUPER PLATE HOLMES & EDWARDS INLAID".
Holmes & Edwards silver company was established in the late 1800's in Bridgeport Ct. In 1898, along with 13 other silver companies, Holmes and Edwards became part of the founding of International Silver Company.
After merging with International silver , International continued to maintain the separate line of Holmes & Edwards patterns and marks.
I believe this spoon may have been manufactured prior to the merging because there is no " IS" stamping accompanying the "Holmes & Edwards" stamping on the back of the spoon.
Here is some info I found when researching this item:
Holmes & Edwards is the high quality line of silverplated flatware for International Silver Co. The company was started in 1882 and taken over by International Silver Co. in 1898. Before the takeover, Holmes and Edwards secured the use of a newly patented process called "silver inlay". Silver inlay refers to a process of inserting a piece of sterling silver in the backs of spoons and forks (the portion of flatware that tends to wear out soonest on silverplate). The term "inlaid" was used up until 1956, so your set is older. The term "deep silver" was used from 1956 to 1972. After 1972, the inlay of sterling silver was discontinued.
