EE's looking for a cornicopia of silver in November.

So.. 5 boxes due this week but that is not the big news.

Big news is, I purchased a collection yesterday, I should receive it sometime middle of next week so I didnt add it to Octobers totals.

I have a friend in So Cal who is out of remission with her cancer and she is nearly broke. I told her to take her grandfathers coin collection to some coin shops and see what they offer her. Well, one offered her $210 and another offered her $250. Way, way too low for what she has. I purchased her collection for the maximum I could possibly spend without putting myself in the danger zone ( not going to link to the top gun song, not going to do it ). I offered her $675 shipped for it and if she has anything that is worth more than melt, I will get her top dollar for it and send her the cash that I get. I am not sure if she has anything of value, she has too much to sort while being sick with cancer and fibromyalgia.

I am not sure exactly everything I will be getting as she might find more she said but this is an approx

175 dimes, merc and rosies
1 quarter ( likely Washington )
20 - 1964 halves
2 - 40% Halves
10 - Peace and Morgan dollars combined, one being a 1879 ( just received Email from her ).
3 - Indian head pennies

I know my offer is still low, its about 76% of melt but its the best I could do and it gets her money tomorrow as she was down to her last $25 combined between purse and checking account. I do hope some of the coins demand a premium so I can get her some more money.

On a side note, on my pick up today, I managed to make another contact with a teller whos husband is dying of cancer. They found his childhood coin collection so I am to take a look at that sometime soon to make an offer on that as well, sadly I am tapped out of cash so either I might have to borrow from one of the parents to take out a personal loan at the bank to purchase the collection which I can pay off come tax time. I always do my taxes ASAP, no reason to wait so interest on the loan will be minimal if I need one.

Well, its been a hell of a last couple of days.

Did my 5 boxes on Friday.

Box 1: Skunked
Box 2: Skunked
Box 3: Skunked
Box 4: Skunked
Box 5: Skunked

Friday at auction I picked up some Sterling heart earrings and a ring for $6. I would have stayed longer but the auctioneer was taking his time and I was exhausted.

Saturday morning I turned in my halves and got a bag of $235 in dimes... skunked

Headed off to the auction. On the way to the auction I close out a savings account at one bank that I have not been to since April but otherwise 2 hours later I arrive, sign in and start checking out the coins. Most things I know I wont be getting, Barber quarters in near AU condition etc. I set my sights low, check out the foreign coins and notice silver in each bag. Not much, $2 to $7 worth in each bag so that is my main plan. All I need is to win 2 auctions and I will break even on gas. As they sell the coins, the guy removes them from the bags and announces they are silver.. the jig is up, they go for more than melt and I am assed out. I do end up winning 5 common date walkers for $11 ea and a 'Dimes of the 20th century' for $4. I do manage to sell 62 IKE dollars to a guy who purchased some at the auction, sold them for $70 to make a fast easy sale. So in total at the auction, I picked up 1.9531 ozt for $51 or $24.064 an oz.

On the way back I hit up a little antique store that is supposed to have coins. I look things over a bit, check out their foreign coins and see a 1942 British 2 shilling in with the 25 cent coins, I snatch that up. I also see a Columbus Expo for $13, I ask if he would take $11 and he says yes so I grab that up. We talk for a bit, he mentions that he sometimes holds shows and auctions and asked for my number if I was interested in attending, I said yes and gave him my number. He mentioned that he buys silver and sometimes sells it to NTR metal, I told him I would match their price and he would not have to ship so I can pick up junk silver from him for 20 times face at todays pricing. I was looking over his jewelry and I noticed a sterling bracelet for $4.25. I asked to look at it, felt like an ounce, weight it, came out 0.99 ozt so I snatched that up.. turns out it was mislabeled but he still gave it to me for that price. He also has $90 in copper set aside right now, which we are working out a price on me buying from him. I might have a buyer for my copper for 2.0 ea. and we are working out a deal for approx 1.5 ea for his so I will make $45 on the deal.

So....

Might do another auction tomorrow, undecided on that at the moment. I have another for the 10th, 15th, 17th and 30th planned and no telling what will pop up between then. Its gong to be a busy month that will likely make me broke.

EDIT:

Also picked up a watch wristband that was 1/20 gold filled 12k for $1, it has 0.0038ozt worth of gold or about about $6 if i recall correctly.

Also a spelling correction. November is not spelled October.

Recieved the package today with a scary green sticker, box recieved damaged, tab unsealed. Everything was in the package though.

Turns out the 10 silver dollars were in fact 11, until I opened the sealed plastic wrap and it was 6 peace dollars, 3 morgans and 2 clad ikes.

The dimes were 50 Rosies and 126 Mercs, nothing of value

The Quarter was a Standing Liberty, 1920 s in G-4

The halves were 20 Kennedy 90% and two 40%

I also picked up a 1 gram Credit Suisse gold bar from the coin shop.. it has been making eyes at me so I snatched it up for the price of melt.

So.. onto the totals as of now.. hope I find something via CRH soon, this month has been sort of painful.

wow that's some rough luck with the CRH, but you've made up for it in many other ways. Looking for foreign silver is a great idea, I plan on versing myself more in what to look for so I can start gaining some silver through that route as well. CRH has been pretty good for me so I haven't strayed much from that line recently, especially since I still have yet to find silver at thrift stores or garage sales. My girlfriend showed me up though and found sterling frog earrings at the goodwill.

Nice thread man, keep up the posts

I hit garage sales every now and then, when I am not working on Saturdays. I have not hit the thrift store in a while, I planned on doing that yesterday but will be doing that today, its been months since I went.

This week has been uneventful in the search for face value silver.

Box 1: Skunk
Box 2: 1/40%
Box 3: Skunk
Box 4: Skunk
Box 5: Skunk
Box 6: Skunk

I am currently sitting at a 91% skunk streak for NO-vember, 11 boxes searched, 1/40% found. Hopefully things change. My funds were a little depleted as of late so I will searching my 7 boxes this week and only 4 the week after that, unless I am repaid early on a loan to a friend. My purchasing of several collections has drained me.

In addition to the halves, I searched

4 CWR's Quarters : Skunked
79 CWR Dimes : Skunked
66 CWR Nickels - Skunked

I did hit two auctions yesterday, which are listed below

I would have done better at the auction but Robin Williams ( look a like ) was there buying crap up at obscene prices. I would have had 2 nazi 2 mark coins for $3 ea and the moron bid against me with a $11 bid, took both coins and other nick nacks worth nothing, took a total of 14 at $11 ea and not a single one was worth 11. In fact I would have valued all 14 at maybe $20-$25 total. Another time he purchased some items I would not have gave $2 for, for $30 ea. Some people have more money than brains.

I have at least 1 more auction to hit next week, this one has some $1 gold coins, its supposed to rain and be cold so hopefully no one shows and I can flip them for a profit.

I do hope my CRH luck changes, its been a painful few months.

the boxes are so painful!

I am having good luck with Craigslist - seach coin, coins, sterling - and then the same in the garage sale section.

Take care mango

I search it but here its slim pickings. Most of the things go up in the city and its too far of a drive ( 90 miles ) to save 20% unless of course it was a large sale. The auction I went to last night was break even when you consider gas but I dont count the gas because I like going to auctions just to see whats out there. Had I got there earlier, I could have graded some coins and made some money but I try not to buy what I dont know. Its getting colder quick around here so garage sales will start disappearing within the next couple weeks.

Nice! Cleaning up on those auctions it seems. Auctions are always funny, either things go for insane prices (I once saw a bag of 20 dateless buffs go for $35-40!) or incredibly cheap (especially on the foreign or mixed lot stuff)

If I can make 20% at an auction, I am doing ok in my opinion. Had I been able to get there earlier, I could have done better last Saturday. I have one I might go to this weekend, still undecided. Depending on what I spend on Friday at a local auction.

I will be doing an update tomorrow after my possible dimes, nickels and two more auctions and 3 boxes of unsearched halves. Last weeks dimes ended up producing after all. I went and did my dump, the machine had a little jam and then kicked out some dimes and nickels. One of the dimes was a 1960, not sure how I missed it in the initial search but the silver gods shined their light on me. I pocketed it and continued the dump.

Searched two out of my 5 boxes of halves and got a decent box, more on that tomorrow.

Hit an auction tonight and walked out with some gold, not exactly sure how much at the moment but I am thinking between $35 and $60 worth between two pieces with only $18 into the two.

Well, this week was not the best but it was a pleasant change, I wont turn it down and always give it a warm bed.

Picked up my bi monthly 2 boxes of halves from my local bank.

Box 1: Skunked
Box 2: 1/40% and 1/90%

While dumping on Friday, as mentioned, I found a 1960 rosie kicked out in a coin jam, likely something I missed with the poor lighting I used on that bag, regardless the silver gods shined their light on me and decided to give me a gift... a sigh of things changing? Perhaps....

Picked up 5 boxes of halves on Friday, searched two.

Box 1: 4/40% - 1/90%
Box 2: Skunked

Decided to hit the auction first and check things out before going home to check the final 3 boxes of halves. Got to the auction at 4:30 looked things over and found some items of interest. Ask the owner when he will start the jewlery and he states at the start of the auction, its already 5 and I dont feel like running home for 30 minutes, coming back etc so I stick around and watch what others are interested in.

From case one I pick up a 12k broach/pin with a pearl on it. It weighs out at 1 gram. I paid $3 for it and I figure minus the weight of the pearl, I have about $25 worth of gold in it. I am going to get it tested, its possible that part of it isnt gold so the values might change on it.

From case three I picked up a 14k necklace weighing in at 1 gram for $15, gold content should be around $32.

Hit two auctions in town, saw nothing worth while. While at one I ran into the father of the owner of the local coin shop. He asked if I knew of anything interesting going on around town and I said no, the only auction I know of is about 50 miles down south, he wanted to go, invited me and so we strolled down to check it out. Nothing of real interest down there, prices going way too high as an Amish fellow buys everything at melt. I did grab a 1967 proof set for $5 for the hell of it ( I hate walking away with nothing ) and two 3 cent nickels, 1865 in about VG and a 1866 in about VF, both nickel not silver, both for $8 ea.

Got home, did my final 3 boxes of halves

Box 1: Skunked
Box 2: Skunked
Box 3: 2/40% - 1/90% - 2/Franklins

I didnt get back in time to make a dump so my dimes/nickels will have to wait until Monday. I will see about flipping the two 3 cent pieces for a profit soon enough, I might know a guy to pay retail for them.

I do a little inventory like this every now and again. It's fun.

But, my spreadsheet is out of date - but its good for oddball coins - like a 1.5 ozt boeing coin, or some russian bullion

I have a full inventory listing of every ounce of silver and gold I own. I need to do an audit of it soon enough, will wait for the start of the new year I think. Make sure my counts are correct, readd up my total ounces and make sure my math is all correct for the next years haul. I also list all my finds by denomination, nickels, dimes, quarters and halves so I know what rates I am finding them at. Just a little OCD.

Dropped off my halves, picked up my normal dimes and nickels. Seems a mistake was made in my favor, which will be fixed during my lunch tomorrow with a call to Julie the vault teller at 9am. Seems a the mistake was worth $443. The teller who gave me my dimes and nickels only deducted the $46 worth of nickels from my $1000 worth of halves dropped off. As I was rearranging my money in my wallet in the parking lot at work, I noticed that I had more money than I should with the weight of the dimes in my possession.

So.. with that said and done, I searched the dimes and replaced the silver ones with clad.

Out of the $443 I pulled3 rosies, much better than I am used to.

I have not checked the nickels, will do so tomorrow, I am too damned tired from work today and fishing all day yesterday. Yes fishing can tire you out. Throwing a cast net for hours, maintaining 8 poles and pulling and dropping anchor to try out different holes will give you a workout.

2 War Nickels captured from my small lot of nickels this week, 43 P and 45 P.

Got the 12k pin checked out, its plated.. oh well, only $3, I still made out on the 14k necklace.

Picked up some more foreign Silver. Paid spot for it. Some neat looking coins, I figure I would start cleaning out some of the stuff they have here and there because its neat to look at.

Going to hit a bank to the east on Friday, they have lots of CWR's, well, that depends on if this guy gets back to me on a Garrett 250, Garret pin pointer and other goodies for $250 off Craigslist. If he gets back to me then I wont have the spare cash for all the CWR's. I will only have the cash for my normal run afterwords but the 250 will be well worth the money.
