Technically it's an error, but these are so common they're not worth anything. However since it's pre-1982 it should be worth about 3¢ due to its copper content.

Yea I was sorting for copper. I see them a lot just wanted to get the 411. Thanks all. Hh

I find dimes like this frequently. I haven't found one yet that is offset enough to actually miss part of the field or lettering.

Keep looking, you'll find one that is off enough to be worth at least a buck.

The best error I've found is a capped die that still had the date discernible.
The LCS offered me $3.
It will probably end up the property of one of my Grandchildren.
I hope it will be worth more then.

It's 95% copper so maybe the Cu value will be worth over $3 when he (or she) gets it?

This is caused by a misaligned die and is quite common so it does not bring a premium.

it is worth it's Cu value only, not worth keeping, toss it in the roll and return it to the bank :)

I have a penny I found while going through a roll that I'm wondering if it's an error. Its a 1992 with no way to tell the mint mark

Here's another one I'm wondering about. I have a few pennies I've seen this phenomena on. Notice the fingerprint like marks all over and the plating that appears to be missing from the face.

I'm glad you posted that first one because I've been meaning to ask about those as well. Is there a measurement or any kind of standard where it goes from being slightly less than perfect to an actual error or is it just a matter of opinion?

It's a lot less than perfect. In person it looks like someone tried to cut it in half with scissors.

Well if something is off, it is an error. Many errors, like grease filled dies or misaligned dies are common, so they bring no premium.

I have a series of 1955 wheaties, in like new condition, that have a progression of the die breaking up on the date, until one of the 5's is almost missing. Anybody got any thoughts on that? Value?

OK coinguy, I will need a few days, as the coins are locked up in a safe place, right now and it will take that long to retrieve them. Thanks, Big Red

Sometimes there errors sometimes it might just be wear marks never know though

Happy Hunting, HFW

I had the same question. I found a 1983 where it was so off center it almost cut into the "In God.." You can see the blank past the rim.
