when the railroads were being built a certain element followed them with desires to separate the workers from their earnings. Whenever they railroad crew came to an obstacle such as a mountain or deep gorge that required east, west, north or south progress to halt until that obstacle was overcame a tent city would spring up. Saloons, dance halls, bath houses, etc.... All for the 'convience' of the track workers. This would last until the railroad crews left and everyone would pull up and move to the next place. Most of the tent cities were abandoned and forgotten but a some have developed into cities or small towns or communities because of their location........

hello, i saw your posting asking about the railroad tunnel and mining tunnels in Estelle,GA. I have been there several times and have seen all 7 narrow gauge mining tunnels. and the main R.R. tunnel. the main tunnel was part of the old T.A.G. line. (Tenn,Ala,GA.) this a very cool place. this tunnel is almost 1 mile long. it is very easy to find if you know where to look. it took me two tries to find it. when i did i felt like a dummy for not finding it the 1st time. i will be glad to give you directions. just message me back. the 7 mining tunnels are a little harder to find and require quite a bit of walking. 1 of them is caving in. but the other 6 are passable. i have some maps that i can send you that will also help in your hunt. problem is that all the info is on my desktop computer which is in the shop for a tune up. but good news I'm picking it up tomorrow. (08/01/09) if still intrested just let me know and I'll get you the info. also listed below are 2 links for some pictures that we made at the tunnels. just click on these links to view the pictures. have a good day!
