I'm leaning toward passing on it, - I haven't seen a picture of the "crack" but if it's in the control housing I assume water and dirt might get in there.

Was a common problem early on and usually you can deal with the loose shaft a while but it definitely has to go in for repair. Probably $40 for the labor (it takes 5 minutes, done it before),and a good talker could probably get the housing for free. Make sure you make it very clear that is the only problem and all you want fixed or they'll try and screw you.
