We are still following up on some of our many researched leads. In the morning we spent just over 2 hours on a very promising looking field. We couldn't find much signs of a site but Dad had a Rare Bust of a Roman Statue. We also got a Steelyard weight, Medieval Spindal whorl, Lead Token, Tudor Buckle, & a small piece of a Saxon Brooch.
After lunch we spent about 4 hours in 4 fields following what we believe to be a Roman trackway. It lead us to a Roman Site, so finally we got our objective for the year. Problem was its been cleaned out by other detectorist. You can tell because most of the Lead & Coins were missing. We did manage 4 scrappies & 2 Roman Brooches.
Other finds included a bent Hammered halfpenny, another Saxon Brooch piece, Iron Fire-steel, Hunts Button, & 13th C Annular Brooch Pin.
We will keep trying for a better site tomorrow.

2 detectorist used to do this land before our owner brought it, so we need to find what they didn't or collect up what they missed.

Agreed...
I let no other detectorist detour me...
I like finding the missed... they cant find it all.

Everyday the "energy" is different than another.
People work a field and find little... next day same field... the horde.

Looks not that bad. Crudad found the best part of the statue! The patina on these finds looks good as well. Kind soil or less fertilizer?

How old do you think the steelyard weights are? I found a handful over the years at some early American sites along with some other early to mid 17th century finds. Mine are conical lead peices with an iron enclosed holes in the middle.

And what do you mean "found a Roman site BUT" ?
But what...?

Sheesh if I ever stood on ground I knew the Romans were on...
And had permission to metal detect it... There would be no "but".

The soil is less clay than normal, as it close to or on flood plain.

When you say weight's', I only found one & that is the big Roman one. The smaller one with a hole is a Spindal Whorl - went on a spinning stick to create wooden threads.
OR
Do you mean Steelyard Weights in general? If so they have been used for thousands of years. They still used similar technology in the 20th C. However, they did switch to brass I think in the 19th/20th C. No idea what the 17th/18th C ones looked like.

We are spoiled but it never lets use lie on our laurels. This year we wanted to get 1 new site, that is hard enough, but we need it to be a replacement for the ones we have, so it needs to be one that we can do for years, not just 2 hours.
