Is Facebook a good thing for you?

I see Facebook as potential fun but I also see the potential for hurt feelings and problems.

As for me I enjoy it but I've had some tell me Facebook was more of a problem then a help. In fact, one person told me about a "family war" that broke out on Facebook!

Some find it difficult to cope with "friends" deleting their well-meant comments, etc.

What are your thoughts? Post here and/or send me a private message. I'm doing a study on this subject and would appreciate your comments.

Thanks
Badger

In my household, Facebook is also known as Buttface...and is not permitted for some of the reasons expressed...

Just like anything else, it can be good and bad.

I have an account to monitor my Daughter's (and her friends comment's), but personally I do not like it.

One time a while back a young boy was goofing around and sending messages to all his friends that were very tasteless, my Daughter showed me and I replied "this is her Father and I will be talking to your Father tomorrow evening when I see him". The kid immediately did a log off, and has not sent rude messages to anyone since. And yes, I did speak with his Father.

I had an account, but deleted it...which you can't do...it's still there awaiting "reactivation"...not.

The problem I had was too many people from the past; some I loved to get back in touch with, but a lot I didn't care to rekindle friendships with, or didn't care either way. It became a burden.

My wife has her own account on Facebook and I have one as well. My account was started at my wife's request as it helps her out somehow with something they call "restaurant" on there.

I rarely ever post on it myself. We have a very large family (numbers I mean) so they all get together on it. Mostly I noticed there are these little cliques that share back and forth and pretty much ignore all the other "friends" who post.

I have one distant relative (young girl) who requested to be on my friends list so I accepted her. Every time I post to her comments she deletes them. I guess she just wanted on my friends list to spy on my comments and those who make comments to me. :dontknow:

One friend nearly left Facebook mad because she posted something like: "If you love (I forget what it was)click YES." Nobody did so she took it personal and threw a little fit.

Anyway, interesting comments! Please continue...

It's use depends on the user.

Like alcohol, it should be used responsibly - LOL.

Kids should be monitored... but that's with everything they do... right?

Lisa and I are geographically separated from our families - we use it and like it.

If you hate it, consider who your friends and family are, since ONLY you control who you interact with there. I used to be a reluctant participant, but now enjoy it on occassion.

Ask yourself - Are your friends and family different than the complete strangers here on T-Net you spend several hours a week interacting with?

I'd have to agree with Jim on this issue. This is a social site, nothing more, nothing less. I use it to stay in touch with family and friends. What is best about it is that one of my childhood friends found me on here and though this and other search engines we are slowly getting all of us back in touch.

If there are people you don't care to associate with, you don't have to. I have several that I would not confirm a friendship status, I don't consider them friends, or even acquaintances for that matter that I would socialize with..

the problem is that an old flame might appear after they searched for you or your better half. Many couple get broken up over this .Know what I mean. Some slither around till they see your status change and then hit on them for a date.I wish hackers would sink that site to the lowest depth. :coffee2:

LOL

Yea, a creepy person from your past sucks. How true! Again, maybe it's not for those who might have to deal with "skeletons".

:laughing9: I'd have a forest full of flames if that was the case :laughing9: Still, it's easy enough to handle tactfully.. If that doesn't work you would have to buy one of my books "How to deal with People".

As I see it, if someone changes their status they are looking for alternatives in their lives and are probably looking for someone old, or new.

I have friends all over the place and we use facebook as a meeting place. Houston, Viet Nam, France , South Africa,Australia and Eastern Europe. It's convenient and it's there. No secrets, no clandestine meetings, just a place to get in touch and pass on messages to all, and you can block anyone you don't want to be there. Whats the problem?. Yes there will always be those who want to ruin things, but it's up to the non psychotic among us to vet the few feebles like Texthe Frenchman and a few others ( usually the same sick person) and make it good for all.

It all depends on your intent and expectations.

I think it is a very useful networking/marketing tool.

Example: I just opened an art store for the holiday season with 5 other local artists and we use Facebook as a marketing tool. We can share photos of the space, displays, new items and specials we have going on any given day. An effective way to reach all our friends and family members near and far.

for me personally, not good or bad

I have 0 interest in facebook.

if ya like that sort of social thing, sure it is good I guess
if you are like me and have no interest, then not saying it is bad, just useless to me.... :laughing9:

I went on facebook for about 3 mins...decided it wasn't for me and have never been back.

I have mostly family members on Facebook, and I'm very particular about who I accept. I have to laugh at some of the people I've received friend requests from, and passing me once in the hallway in high school ain't gonna get you in. It's a good way to hear from them, particularly all my kids. You can't get them to call, but send them a message on FB and they're right on it. It is a little aggravating when my grandson sends me a message on it FROM ACROSS THE ROOM!!! That's a little too much.

I could care less about facebook as a social site for "friends". I have an account but I only use it to correspond with family that doesn't live locally. Nothing further than that.
