When I get a worn looking nickel I'll fltp it over and quickly check for the mintmark above the dome in case it's a war nickel. I did this when I got change at the store yesterday and it turns out it was a novelty coin. It had heads on both sides. Whoever made it did a great job because I can't see the seam very well. It is a real coin hollowed out and another coin shaved down and inserted in the hollowed out one. No sense taking a pic, it just looks like a regular coin on both sides except the years are different. I got this in change at the same store I got a lead quarter from a few years back.

Re: fake nickel

to me, fake or not, I wouldn't mind, that's a cool novelty item that I would hold onto. Odd find, but good eye!

Decided to add a pic of each side. You'll notice the coin with the 1978 date is the coin that had the outer ridge shaved off and it was then inserted in the other coin that had been hollowed out. Pretty good job.

WOW. thats a lot of work and a fine job. I bet he's sorry he lost it.
Who knows how much he made off flipping it: heads I win, tails you lose?

That nickel is worth $5 on eBay.

I'll buy it off of you for $10.
