Farm finds & 2 "whats-its"

Had a few hours to kill, so I hit the old farm again before the house falls in. It was windy today, and the house is showing further signs of twisting and coming apart since I was there last. Some things I dug (the two tin pieces), and the other stuff I happen to stumble upon. The old piece of green crockware, door knob, old door lock , and brown bottle, I found in the house.
Any idea on either of the two tin pieces, as to what they are?On the back of the curved tin piece is a piece of leather crimped onto it. No writing on it.

Another neat thing I discovered while in "hidden cache hunting mode", was some pieces of old newspaper in the shed. They were actually put there for some reason when it was built. The reason I know is, they were found placed between the shed framing and the wood siding put on. The nails ran right through the pieces of paper.
Any ideas why that would have been done? Insulation?
The pieces I was able to recover were very brittle. I brought them home to research so I could hopefully put a date with this old farm property. There were only small sections, but I did see the following names:
*News and Observer - That's our current newspaper here in Raleigh that I find out has been around since the Civil War. (Learn something new everyday)
*Josephus Daniels - Born around 1850, and later purchased the News and Observer.
*Senator Overman - Became a NC Senator in 1914.
Well, I now know the house is at least from the early 1900's.
No gold bars or hidden caches today, just a few hours of fun. ;D

Neat finds, MM. No clue to the whatzit...I like that door lock and knob. Glad you were able to get some reading from the papers. You checked real good around the out buildings? ;D ;D

RR,
I need to spend time on the grounds and perimeter of the buildings now. I was concentrating on the house first, since it will fall over soon (that may be a good thing). I hit the old chicken coop , the shed (a lot of car parts), outhouse, and the barn. I haven't done too much hunting on the outside except location the two garbage dumps. I also want to dig deeper down in the outhouse. It looks like I've dug out about 4 feet deep so far.
This property I usually hit on Sundays, so just once a week.
Hopefully, I can find a coin or two eventually.
Thanks,
MM

Nice finds. I agree on what txkickergirl said about the news paper being insulation. At first glance I thought that the what's it on the left looked like a fire extinguisher hook. The other one I thought looked like a lighter, but I would go with what txkickergirl said on that too.

Excellent looking hunting ground! Do a long, slow, methodical search of this place and you should do well! Good luck!

MM - If I'm reading your patent number correctly (#1,896,140) I think you have yourself a pocket lighter designed by Alois Kaufmann of Vienna, Austria. He filed for the patent March 30, 1931 and it was awarded February 7, 1933.

Wow, very cool. That is the correct patent # on the bottom. I thought the hole on top looked like where a wick would come through, but wasn't sure.
Is there a website you can recommend to track down items with the patent #'s?
I'd be very interested.
Thanks all for your help.

Re: Farm finds & 2 "whats-its"

You can just google the U.S. Patent office and find the index of patents. I thought that lighter was a lighter but couldn't figure out how to light the lighter. What a sentence! Great stuff! Monty
