Great story Jeff! A friend told me his buddy in southern Ohio has a similar situation. His Dad passed away in an accident and had stated he has hidden gold also. I offered to help look for it but no such luck.

Possible, But Hopefully Not.
I like to think Just another True Treasure Tale/lead.

& Hopefully one day someone who reads this & Is Not a Skeptic,
Actually searches with a Detector & Pulls it up.:treasurechest:

of course, after they find it, they think it's Counterfeit or a dream.
They can pack it up & Ship it My Way :coffee2:

$30K in Gold! I would have a heart attack! Would be hard to not post it on T-Net! Maybe just post one of the coins!

The problem with the story is one of inflation. $30,000 in 1865 would have been the equivalent of 45 million! So a Missouri farmer in the CW era had the equivalent of $45M laying around in gold that he decides to bury.

I love seeing the old newspaper treasure stories. Some of them are absolutely true. You just have to analyze the details and situations to figure out which ones are worth chasing. Always keeping in mind that newspapers have never had a problem with printing anything or changing any details to help sell copies. Maybe the story is completely fake. Maybe the truth was $300 in gold but that didnt sound exciting enough.
