Two years ago on fathers day I hunted a site in Cold Harbor and found the first of two US buckles. This morning I went out to the same site and found this regimental letter M. Only unit I've found in researching so far is the 1st Vermont cavalry regiment M. Interestingly a friend found a horse bit about twenty yards away so until I research further I'll assume 1st Vermont cavalry! Thanks for looking, happy fathers day and happy hunting!

Excellent find. Civil War items are getting harder and harder to find. Great recovery.
