Federal "Land to Parks"?

A local park has a big sign that says it came from the Federal Land-to-Parks program administered by the National Park Service and Dept. of the Interior (IIRC). The sign also says the park belongs to the local township.

So... does anybody know if this would be safe to metal detect there, or should I just avoid this place? Does anybody here have experience with this kind of park?

I am planning to ask the township eventually, but I know how bureaucrats are about giving permission of any kind to do anything. (All you'll get is a No from someone who can't say Yes)

Re: Federal "Land to Parks"?

Under this program the Federal property is deeded to a state, town, county, or group. After it is approved by various agencies the management and regulation of the property is by the approved group or agency. This would make usage and public access controlled by the park in this case. I have found the best way to get permission is in person. There is a good chance you will get an answer and it may be yes. We can only hope.
