Boy, at first glance it does look like a shot gun shell. Can't say I might not have done the same, can you make out what it reads?

Too corroded, just a few letters...I think maybe "co" something but who knows! I've found one other from the same place that dated to ~1820

That one also dates to the early 1800s. That type button dates from the 1790s to the 1840s. Good find.
