My scale never goes below zero, but in the low "iron" ranges it may depend on depth, size, shape, degree of rust, length of time in the soil. Just any number of factors. I notice that hardened steel, like a pocket knife, usually reads higher than soft iron as well.

What's the difference between a -1 and a -9 target? Size?

I get a lot of time on ferrous targets because the Mexican 1,2 and 5 peso coin is ferrous. At least for me at the beach I do not see a connection to target size. The only way to get some sort of lock on a ferrous target is to be in the horseshoe mode.

Even then ferrous targets double ring. That double ring just does not allow a good number lock, the numbers seem to jump around in ferrous. I'll see if it locks better rotating and hitting the target with a single ring.

Mostly ground noise shows up in -7,-8,-9. After that it’s a function of conductivity which is highly variable depending on the amount of rust/corrosion, shape, and mass of metal.
