Heres some places to go in Iowa. Iowa river near steamboat rock and eldora in hardin county. Try the following creeks also Otter creek, brush creek. The following rivers show color if you can get through the overburden Volga, des moines, and the little sioux, little skunk. Gold is fine to small flakes I would pan first then if it pays good for you. Then look in to other equipment.

I live near both the West and East forks of the Des Moines rivers. The Boone river is also close to me. How do I go about panning? What should I use for a pan? Is there something I can use so I don't have to buy one?

The New 49ers has a good video on panning. I think theres some on you tube. You can get a good gold pan for under 20 dollars the cheater riffles in these will help you catch some of the gold you would other wise loose until you develop you technique.
