finding meteors on blm land??

If you are on BLM land with a metal detector be sure to tell the Ranger you are prospecting for gold. The Obama Administration is indeed trying to use the antiquities laws to claim all rights to meteorites on public lands!

BLM land used to be called "Public Land" until Richard Nixon called it "National Resources Land" and put it under the
"Bureau of Land Management" which used to be called "Bureau of Indian Affairs" and you know how they got treated.
By the way, the 9th Amendment to the Constitution says all rights not given to the government by the Constitution
belong to the people. I don't think they covered "Meteorite ownership." You might have a case for keeping them.

To have a chance to own a meteorite of your own, you must find it on private land. BLM is controlled by the government, and all meteorites found therein also belong to the government.

Interestingly, if the meteorite is known to have been worshipped or revered by a Native American tribe, it belongs to the tribe. The Willamette Meteorite, the largest currently known found in the United States, was just returned to the Grand Ronde Tribe, as their reservation is where the remaining Chinook Indians were relocated to.

If it fits in my pocket or backpack it is mine.

Amen to these 3 Comments :icon_thumright:

I wish it were true.

Remove all traces of any possible soil from the sample: meteorites are perhaps the most studied rocks on Earth. Soil particles in tiny cracks or crevices will be traced. Kind of like DNA being used in cold cases.

Found a Real unique scenario this last winter , ok . . . Lobo st Screamed & i dug 4 "s Down & found a Iron Rock (which streaks pink with Nickel Test & stuck to earth magnet) Found this Black 12grm pretty rock sitting on a brass Property marker Triangulating , Ariz. priv ranch , blm & other entity (I Forget which : ) but the Space rock's fat end was clearly hanging further over on My Friends Ranch prop. so it went into my Stash Pouch without any further contemplation of this Clearly, easy to solve Matter. Friend's Ranches work out Handily at times ~ with AU as well. So'ze Ya'll get to beepin' & Diggin'.

Blm & Ranch /Cattle are intermingled alot ~ so you drive over to the Ranchline & Rub that Stoney black Magnetic rock on a bunch of Cow-Poop cause then the Dirt sample is mixed with the poopies & BLM doesn't really raise cattle themselves , Correct ?

Hey folks,
What are the chances really that, a. any government official would know what a meteorite was, b. what kind of soil it came from and c. truthfully give a crap as long as their paycheck was on time and correct?

Reality check: meteorites often break apart about 10-30 miles above the earth's surface, resulting in multiple strikes called strewn fields. Such fields can cover many square miles. Yet it is possible to identify each meteorite to its parent body, and therefore sometimes also date the fall of the meteorite.

It has been suggested (and I believe) that meteorites are the most studied rocks on earth. Try to imagine the Hope Diamond being accidentally broken, and someone not recognizing pieces of it.

In AZ, 25 pounds of "rock" can be collected by an individual, which includes petrified wood. Aren't meteorites included as "rock"? TTC

" Such fields can cover many square miles " = (actually can be Hundreds) Answers it's own Dilemma Doesnt it ?

#1 - On Who's property was it Found

" Yet it is possible to identify each meteorite to its parent body "

#2 - So God (dont care if Anyone likes that or not) owns it while it's a "Parent Body" (In Fact GOD'S the Parent Body) then it comes into our Atmoshere , Hits the Earth & Becomes the Sole Automated property of the Socialistic minded A%#holes in Authority currently or would the Maker have us Peons enjoy it as well ? Al Gore's Tarded , Greenhouse effect a hoax, Space exploration a Waste of Money, there is no Global village - They All hate us anyway and I think You outta go dump that Lame Spiel to some ignorant college punks (that NEVER paid a Bill / Mommy or Me do) who will never afford the American Dream cause they're Buried with Debt that came from My Tax Money. now in Calif. Illegal Aliens are Stealing our American Dream thanks to Carter, Clinton (Both) and Sarak-oh'Mama or whatever that Rocket Surgeon's name is. By the way the 2 main Libs in congr. need Psych Meds - cause their out of their gourds like You :BangHead:
