Found these today, went through roughly 1300.00 worth of halves. This was my first walking liberty as well (1946). I kep the 1971 with the hole drilled in it because it was unique. I also managed to get 4 rolls of untouched 2007 nickels, decided to get them and just put them up for later. Total Finds:

1964-4
1965-2
1966-1
1967-5
1968-4
1969-4
1 Walking Liberty-1946
post 2001-6

I think the one you got with the hole drilled in it is the way some one is marking their coins.
I get a lot of those myself.

WTG on the walker!

Concerning the 71 with the hole drilled in it, I have found about 7 of those from different year and I assume that they were worn as a pendent until someone needed the money. That would be a very laborious way to mark coins.

You're both right, after all, a drill hole is a mark!

When I find one with a hole in it I put it on my keyring. It's useful if I find myself with no cash and need a snack or something.
