Ok I dug a TON of trash but took a few keepers including what I believe to be a very old copper coin. Same size as a penny and the place has been abandoned since 1914 so I'm thinking Indian head (would be my oldest coin). There is crust all over it and I can't make out any detail through it. Please any advice on cleaning old copper cents is greatly appreciated.

Take some peroxide in a glass cup and heat it up be very carful if you use a microwave. Drop the sucker in it and check every 10 min and tooth brush it off and repeat until you can see it. That thing is toast so you can't really make it any worse. Good luck and let us know what it is. Nice finds

Scouts out!

I'm only in my second month detecting wheels, no silver yet and a bit disappointed. What do you mean by etrack silver finds?? The older places I have hit are always full of trash from kids hanging out there.

I have managed to pull a few wheats though and some cool relics. And whatever the smoked penny I found today is. I really want coins though.

I don't really like the peroxide method (too harsh) just soak er in olive oil, take er out every day and lightly toothpick it then toothbrush the crud off..drop er back in the olive oil and repeat every day till satisfied..
