I went digging since the ground had finally thawed out- and was rewarded with some keepers! Some staff buttons, an eagle, and civilian flower button and a pristine 1863 fatty indian! The 16mm GS eagle with a skinny shield turns out to be made by Steele and Johnson Ca. 1860. Seems like a rare variant as I can only find one other example with this backmark and it is a C in the shield cavalry officers. Pretty happy with this little outing!

The title "Orphanage" says poor as a church mouse (actually broker than a church mouse) and clothed with hand-me-downs or donated rip n tears...probably no toys, pocket knives or typical kids stuff...

Maybe a lot of buttons and a marble or two...

Find the outhouse or kitchen and look for plates, cups, spoons and bottles...

If you can find a barn or cellar, so much the better...

And look for a rubbish dump or burn pile...test for diurnal winds that blow away from the old building locations...then look in the adjacent fields...

It was actually a state run orpahnge! And I actually have found about 50 civil war era buttons about 10 civil war coins including a reale, rings, and other stuff! It's been very productive more than I ever thought it would've been!

Might want to be careful going to this site, a Civil War orphanage sounds like just the place to be haunted by ghosts! :laughing7:
In all seriousness great finds! From a very exciting, albeit sad and destructive time in our history! :treasurechest::thumbsup:
