Rained last night, so I hit the field bright & early this morn. Found a lot of flakes, chips, pottery pieces, more of the turtle shell, even some clam shells & cooking balls. Before I realized it, it was almost 4:00, geez time really slipped past too soon. Heading to the house had to check on the cattle...another little newborn, 3rd of the year.

Very unusual find...quartz crystal sphere. I assume it was a trade, or they traveled & hauled it back here. :dontknow:

From the looks, it seems to have been knapped some & broke & they just tossed it. :dontknow:

River rat - too cool on the quartz piece. Have you ever found quartz like that in a field before? Can we get a cleaned up picture of the crystal?

Thanks,
Joe

Joe, I know what quartz crystals are...dug for them in Arkansas, but never found a single sphere like this. I have several larger clusters in my flower bed. That's why I was shocked to find this in the artifact field. You have to understand this field (cow pasture) is next to the river. Our farm dates back to 1876, and this particular pasture was farmed back then. According to him (FIL), a logging ramp was at the river back there too, the owner at the time did not allow for them to cut through his fields, so a trail was made on the edge. (you can still see evidence). When my father-in-law purchased in 1963, he used it strictly for cattle. Another area of the farm where he had his garden, artifacts were always found there. Also, at the time I was told that 3 100lb burlap sacks of artifacts were in the farm house, during the transition of moving into the house, all 3 sacks had disappeared. So, the field I'm hunting now, was plowed by husband in '06, I've found so much stuff...mostly Indian artifacts, but logging chains and other farming implements were found too. It had not been plowed since, due to droughts (my cattle needed grazing pasture). Early Dec '11, he plowed again so Feline Peachy & myself would have an area to hunt. I pick up everything I see out there, hoping that I can piece together something broken that was found previously. Anything odd, had to have been carried there by Indians like this quartz. Also, you have to understand my part of LA is swamp, no rocks here at all, there all gravel pits located about 25 miles northeast of here. So any rock found was hand carried by man, I have rocks that you can see where they were worked, something went wrong with the knapping & they just tossed it.
