Tracing a call from a random guy at a yard sale netted me some coins. Went to the guys house, and first we saw the guns... Not interested. Then the flatware. Plated- bummer. The fishing reels... Some good pens but wants retail on them. The jewelry, coins and watches... I went right for the gold 1893 ms62! Almost didn't happen. I offered $600. His lady friend comes in the room. He asks her if it's a good deal. She pulls out her phone starts looking up prices for $10 gold coins. Not by date but buy prices. "Says $600 is too low, some go as high as $15,000!" I said you have to go with what it is. Not what it could be. We settled at $625. I guess it's from some coin horde as well. Got some others with it for $1100. The panda is a 1983 paid $300 w/ 14k bezel. Fishing reel I bought for $40 is not pictured, sells for around $180. So that knocks the prices down a tad.
Thanks for looking.

Holy cow. I wish I could only run across things like this. But seeing that he didn't know what he had makes me wonder if it was stolen. Congrats on the score.

Rive d'Or coins have a pretty cool history, according to a coin shop owner I talked with once. Something like they were paid to France after WWI and hidden from the Germans in WWII, but you could Google and find out the real story.

BK...I can't tell from your post if the $1,100 included everything shown plus the Penn Reel or was the Panda and the Penn Reel separate! Without trying to determine the actual/possible values of each, it seems that you did fair on the coins if the Panda was included in the $1,100 price. Buying coins with Provenance is always a good investment strategy, as long as they are purchased under their market value! Personally, I would have tried to work a deal which included the guns, the coins, the fishing reels and any vintage/antique fishing lures/equipment!

He was more attached to his fishing stuff then the coins. I couldn't touch the fishing stuff with $500. Wasn't worth it to me.

The Morgans graded are 1886,1887,1888. Non graded 1921 and 1891.

The $1100 included everything. $625 for the $10, $300 for the panda. $150 for the graded Morgan's $40 for the 14k gold bezel with ID tag, $20/ loose Morgan x 2 and $40 for the reel. So whatever that adds up to.

Thanks for the clarification and it appears that you did well!! You did okay on the 1921 Morgan but if you find any priced above $30, I would recommend passing on them unless you have checked them out first and they are definite VAM Varieties. There are some rare and very valuable VAM's found in the 1921-P, D and S Mint Morgans which can go for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars.

I normally wouldn't pay that for it. But he was kinda stubborn and needed the money also. So if I overpay for one and it makes him trust me a little more I'm ok with that.

He recently lost his wife and had a stroke too. So $20 or $10 wasn't that big a deal.

Do the other Morgans have mint marks? The 1921-D is really much better than the regular 1921. I still think you did pretty well.

Nope. Just Philadelphia mints. I wish though!

Sold the panda for $400 w/ bezel. The same buyer wants the $10 gold as well. Offered $800 but I really do want to keep it. it is temping though.

Guess the 1921 is a D. That's probably better then a P?

Yep, with a total mintage of 86,730,000 Morgan Silver Dollars minted by all three Mints, the (D) Denver minted Morgan Dollar has the lowest mintage that year! Also, the Denver Mint also produced an abundance of flawed Morgan Silver Dollars that year, some of which are some of the toughest and most sought after VAM's of all of the Morgan Silver Dollars minted.

$800 for the $10 Gold is about market value for the coin without the Provenance. However, a lot of Collectors still do not know anything or much about the Rive d'Or Coin Collection and even with the Provenance, it may not garner a significant premium over other MS-62 graded 1892-P $10 Gold Eagles. If you decide to sell the coin, then counter-offer with $850 and if needed, meet in the middle.
