First 1700's coin

I got to go on a two hour hunt this morning, the first thing I found when I walked into the Field was a colonial pipe stem not 3 feet later I found a nice flat button. I started to hunt with high hopes of getting a coin. It started to rain and that's when the finds started coming in the next find was a 1847 large cent and I found three more flat buttons near the large cent, then I found two marble shaped buttons and then two more of the round buttons not sure what kind they are. I walked closer to the woods and found a nice caped button and a musket ball and one more flat button then I heard a faint signal I dug down 8" and the signal got stronger so I dug down a couple more inches and found a coin at first I thought it was a half dime but I Saw George the third on the front and the date 1776 so I guess its a reale. I jumped for joy and started scanning the area and came up with a small buckle. My baby sitter called so I had to call it a day but it was a great morning! HH!

Excellent finds. Maryland is so historic and such beautiful country. I have relatives in Laurel and wish I could get down there next spring/summer to detect! Hope you find many more!

Congratulations on your first 1700 coin, it is the Spanish King Carolus III(Charles) on the Half Real you found.

Getting the buttons and the Large Cent made for a nice rounded hunt for you!

WOW!!! Great finds. I would of probably ended up divorced and lost the kid. LOL. I know your gonna hit that field again. I wish we had the history in this area, mid 1800's is about it, but thats OK to. Good luck and post the rest of the finds and anymore that you dig, they are great. HH JYD

Re: First 1700's coin

very nice! as Don pointed out it is Carolus III not King George on your coin. a spanish 1/2 Real, very nice indeed! these coins circulated for many years in the colonies so to find one with a nice date is a cool find!

Re: First 1700's coin

Great finds!! Hope you find lots more. Just wanted to say hi from Texas to someone from my hometown. I graduated from WiHI in 1964. Next time I come home to visit, I will definitely bring my detector.
Best Wishes,
Dustbuster
