Got out for about 45 minutes this evening and found my first Buffalo nickel. I can barely make out the date but its a 1914 with an s mint mark. My oldest coin so far. This Oregon soil really stains coins.
The property is an elementary school. The original school was built in 1909 but torn down in 1976. In 2000 the new school was built but on the other side of the property. Very possible there may be some nice old finds.
I have found two Buffalos in my digging life...neither had a date on them. One thing on my wish list for this year...a 'date readable' Buffalo. Nice find!
I do the lemon juice/baking soda thing on the buffs I'm lucky enough to find. I can usually read the date on them after about twenty minutes. It's worked on ones that I thought that there was no way anyone could ever pull a date off of it. It almost looks like you can see the date on that buff...loupe/magnifying glass?
Edited: for some reason when I read it the first time I didn't think you could get a date. I know, I know, it helps to read everything and comprehend what it says.............LOL
the buffs and IH reflect the past of this great land, of the times when some of our ancestors roamed this land freely, my father is an Elder of the Western Cherokee and those coins always put a smile upon his face. great find.
Great first Buff, after 10 years I found my first on last Spring 1918 & was lucky enough to have a readable Date .
Needless to say I'm very happy with it
Funny did not get any Complements at my local Club Meeting.
