Told my boss to shove it yesterday and went detecting with Bill D. This was the first time at this site and we had high hopes because it was a the site of a colonial tobacco warehouse which means there was a lot of activity there. Well, we searched around and never really hit on much. Either the place has been cleaned out or we never put out our coil over the right spot. While roaming around I got one decent signal and it turned out to be a cob.....thank goodness because it have been consecutive days of being skunked.

We left that site and went to one of Bill's stand-by sites to dig some holes in search of some colonial trash. You can't dig a hole at this site without hitting brick, oyster shells or colonial bottle spouts....it's loaded. I also did a little detecting there as well and found a few buttons.

Although the finds weren't plentiful as least I did find my first spanish silver for the detecting season which was a relief.

Looks great to me. I would love to see that coming out of the ground around here. Tobacco warehouse does sound like an awesome place to swing the coil. Too bad not much around but at least you have the killer cob for the day. I would give it another try.

To someone who has not found a silver coin of any kind in 2014 (me!) that cob would be quite enough!

Man I was really excited about that site Joey. Bummer that is didn't produce. At least you got on the board for the season with the cob, and tied up the score in the silver dept. Maybe that new site we got permission for will be loaded when we go back after the beans are cut, and we get to check out that early 1700s cellar hole and slave quarters. BTW - I'm adding a pic showing the roadbed that was used for accessing the tobacco warehouse site from the wharf down below. We need to hunt that spot if we can get permission. No telling how many pockets full of colonial change passed through that spot. And maybe bottles in the river too.

the colonial government in Virginia designated certain sites for warehouses for tobacco control and export. A lot of the trade happened at these sites so I'm not sure why this site was void of targets. We still have to check out the shoreline so maybe my lord Baltimore or tree coin will be down there

Good catch. Looks a little bent, but strong detail, do you know, or can you tell the year ?

The cob is an exciting early find !! the site might seem devoid of targets but there will be the far flung find somewhere - go slow !

Sometimes a really nice keeper will come out of a very quiet hunting area, congrats on the Cob, what a great way of breaking the 2014 ice.

That's a great point. Look at Bills Lord Baltimore. Same with my spot. Very very quiet and bang the detecting gods throw you a bone.

Thanks Rick. I wish I could make out a date but the other side is a mess. I can hardly ever get dates off of my cobs. Most are heavily clipped and worn but least this one has some detail.
