Got out with some good friends for a few hours yesterday and managed to pull these out of the ground. Man let me tell you I did not expect to ever see any cut silver from this place. Needless to say I am going back soon.
Jeff K
Any help identifying the cut silver would be appreciated.

1/8th of an 8R coin from the reign of Carlos III 1759-1788.
Complete obverse legend would read:
CAROLVS III D.G.HISPAN ET IND REX
The reverse would read:
VTRAQUE VNUM then probably an "M" for Mexico followed by the date.
Your coin shows the "III D" of the obverse and the "UM" of the reverse.
Great find!
Don........
PS: If you orient the "UM" to the 3 o'clock position, the verticle image is a column topped by a crown.

That is certainly a nice find! Better in my mind than an intact 8 reale!!

Congratulations, and many more cobs to come.

Hoorah indeed!!

(sorry about this, but) In your hunt for a 8 reale, it seems all you got was a wedgie carpetbagger. I would mind getting either an 8 reale or wedgie similar to yours.

Thanks for the ID Don, it really gives life to it knowing the type of reale and where it came from.

Although I would certianly love to find an 8 reale I think this is a unique find in itself.
Thanks for all the comments.

FYI Thomas Jefferson wanted to use the Spanish Milled Dollar (8 Reale) as the standard for our currency. Each piece of 8 was worth 12.5 cents. That is why a quarter is sometimes referred to as "two bits".

It remained legal tender in the United States until the Coinage Act of 1857 discontinued the practice.

It seems like old areas either have cut Spanish or they don't. I don't, but you do, so it probably won't be the last!
