I had about an hour to hunt before dark and I hunted for about 30 minutes and found a 1850 large cent. I was hunting my way back to the truck to head home and I had a huge signal. I knew it couldn't be a pop can because this former log cabin site is about 2.5 miles from the closest road.

I dug the hole and I was surprised to see my first Morgan dollar. It is an 1889 Morgan silver dollar in good condition.

I have been checking this forum site and reading everyone's posts for over a year now. When I found my first Morgan dollar, it made me man up and want to write my first post. This is my second year metal detecting and this is my best find yet.

(I hope the pictures come out to be the proper size. I'm sorry if they're not.)

I know how much the coin is worth I was just joking with the zero most of the coins we dig don't have great value do to the scratches on them when you put them under a microscope you see all of them. It is all about find I log every coin where and when I found them and never sold one

You did very good finding that. I've been hunting with a metal detector since 1977 and have never pulled an old silver dollar.

Very cool my friend. I keep very detailed journals as well. Great introduction! Excited to see what other treasures you will be pulling from the dirt.

finding old big silver is rare for a couple of reasons ... first off in the old days lots of folks "barter traded",,so money was not used sometimes -- second a dollar was often a entire's days wages (or more in some cases) so if lost it would really , really be searched for == a union privates wages during the civil war was 50 cents per day * === and third --lots of folks if they had money post civil war had "paper money" rather than heavy to carry silver dollars or bunch's of coins or even worse they might have the dreaded "company "script money depending where and how they worked..

plus if a place has been detected --big silver is hard to miss --unless the past detectorist thought it was a soda can ??? them :laughing7: you
