First find: Ohio River valley - mortar/pestle or civil war round?

Hi guys, first time poster here Let me first say that this website is AWESOME! I have enjoyed reading your posts and looking at your pictures. I keep finding myself wanting to clock out from work early to go out exploring.

I live in Southwest Ohio and I spend a lot of time outdoors. I fish the Ohio River and many of its smaller tributaries, and every once and a while I find something cool. I found something this week that I'd like to throw by you guys.

I know the area that I live in has a lot of Civil War history and Indian artifacts. I suspect the rock that I found is a pestle used to grind down grain or crush nuts, but without any other arrowheads or artifacts nearby I wasn't sure if I was correct. My friend thinks it's a Civil War artillery round, but it appears to be made out of pretty soft stone.

Any ideas?

98% of the time, civil war bullets and ammunition (excluding cannonballs) are made of lead. if you don't mind hurting the thing a little bit take something sharp and poke the edge and in theory it should make a little mark. or you can give me the weight in ounces and I could figure it out. either way, nice find!

I suspect the rock is natural river rock, but I will wait for the Native experts to chime in.

it could possibly be a pestle and it could have dropped out of a canoe or boat wich would explain the lack of other items hopefully someone can answer it for you

The flat side does not look natural. I say fashioned by man - probable use as a pestle. Nice artifact.

If it is a very soft stone, I don't think it would be a pestle(no one wants ground up rock in their food) A guess it could be a weight prefrom. cool artifact, I do belive it has been worked on by man, due to the almost flat spot. It's a keeper for sure.
