This might be a dumb question please forgive my ignorance, will that destroy the coin? I'll do it if it makes it look better.

I wouldn't do much if anything with the nice one. And it's not dumb to ask a question. I've found that as a rule you get very good advice with regard to cleaning coins on here. This advice comes from lots of experimenting and experience. What have you got to lose with the second LC? Boil some peroxide and drop the LC in face up. Leave it in there till it stops bubbling and brush it lightly with a toothbrush and see if you don't pick up more detail.

Well here it is, thanks for all your help and advice I gave it the bath and it looks like 1818 !!! I couldn't be happier !

Such an old coin an important find for me personally. I can't wait to get into the 1700s next lol.

YES!

I'm glad you gave it a shot, and it looks like you got beautiful results! Congratulations, that's an awesome find :)

Also the peroxide can dry it out pretty good. After you get it out and rinse it off and let it completely dry, I recommend you coat it with some kind of oil and give it a good dab with a paper towel. Don't use a rag because it will take too much oil off.

The benefit of a peroxide bath varies depending on the nature of the coin.

If the coin is deeply pitted, a peroxide bath will make it look horrible.

If the coin has only hard-to-remove surface dirt, peroxide will make it look awesome.

I think your Large Cent looks awesome as it is. It has great detail. Peroxide might improve it, but it might make it worse. It's a tough call. My advice would be to leave your nice Largie alone. At least for now.

I think you'll find more in the future. Some maybe a little rougher than this one. Maybe you'll want to experiment with those before trying this one. It's all up to you of course, but that's a mighty nice first Large Cent, just as it sits.

Good advice on the condition and when to use. Looks like yours came out nice!

Since I won't be selling either one of these coins I have decided to clean the 1842 large cent and it came out great. Just used one warm peroxide soak, a light toothbrush application. I have a very nice presentable coin now for my book of coin finds.

Thanks for looking and thanks for all your comments and help everyone.

I love this forum because it keeps me going when I see other peoples great finds, I search a little harder, dig more holes, and eventually I find good stuff too.
