Hello Everyone,
After having my second child a year ago, I lost track of time and MDing :). My family went to my sister's for Thanksgiving who lives in a wooded area in an area established in the 1600's. I went in the woods for a little bit and found this about 4 inched deep. I think it is part of a shoe buckle but all ideas are welcomed. I check the buckle site linked from treasure net and it seems it is part of one of them. Any idea the age? or what it is. I put the dime next to it to give it size. Thanks and it is good to be back :)

I have attached the additional pick of the rusty item. I have a dime with it to show size. It was found in the same area with the clam sheels. Is this another type of buckle? or is it junk that i do not need to do electrolysis on. Thanks all help appreciated :)

I think its the centre part of a shoe buckle, late 18th century (maybe). Although the metal & patina look more modern

How modern do you think, I found this piece where there was a lot of clam shells in a wooded area.

Modern by my standards, but I guess it might be 1900ish by the look of it. I would be more sure if it were complete.

Over here those shells are a good sign of roman occupation, although they were eaten in most periods.

Its an iron buckle used on horse tack, might not be over 100 years old. Hard to tell, they changed very little over the years.

Awesome find! That is part of a two prong chape, the center part of the buckle. I agree it is late 1700's! You should really hunt that site well. There may be some nice coins and buttons out there 8)

Pat:

We have missed you here at TNet. It was great speaking with you earlier this week. Hopefully we can hit the woods again soon.

I would say the buckle pictured with the dime is mid 19th century or earlier. I am posting a pic of a reproduction of a colonial era buckle for comparison.

The iron buckle looks like one I found last week. I think it may be part of a carbine sling button, civil war era. I am attaching the one I found with the Flying Eagle Cent last week, and a modern replica.

I am looking forward to seeing more great finds from you here!

clam shells were used in making buttons not sure how early they were used but lasted into the 1940s when plastic was invented.....native americans also used the shells for tools and jewelry....check the shells....if there is a round hole in each one then you found a dump for a button factory
