Man do I have a lot of catching up to do on Tnet!!! Not only have I not been detecting in about three weeks, I've been off of Tnet all that time as well. Holy cow there are some nice looking finds up in the banner that I can't wait to read about.

I decided to get out detecting today after about three weeks busy with other things or weather not cooperating with me. I went back out to my favorite campground site to try to pull some more silver from it. I was disappointed to see how high the grass and weeds have grown up in the fields that I like to hunt in.

Well, after about 2.5 hours, I did not have any silver coins to show for my efforts (and only about 5 coins total - current clad), but right before heading home I took a walk through a big field near my car and I found the first gold ring I've found at the campgrounds yet (with the exception of my own gold wedding band that I had lost and then found 4 months later - yes, remember that little story?). I've found around a dozen rings at the campground site, with around half of them silver, but had never found a gold ring there and knew there must be one.

So today was the day. Here are the pics of the ring. It is small - likely a child's ring. It is a very deep yellow gold color, and quite heavy for its small size. I do not recognize the hallmark inside. It looks to me like it reads 100 or .001. I also don't recognize the style of writing on the ring.

Can anyone help me determine what karat gold this might be, and what the letters on the ring mean?

You mentioned three clues that I think are key about this ring:

Color- deep yellow

Weight- unusually heavy given its size

Marking- 100

My first name is not Sherlock, but to me, those all point to 24k :o

Re: First time out in about three weeks - gold ring! Need help with hallmark

The ring is from Thailand.
The inscription roughly translates to "Busabot" which is a man's name.
The 100 means 100% or 24K gold.
24K gold jewelry is common in Thailand and often used as a fall back during hard economic times.
I have some Thai 24K gold jewelry and it is hallmarked exactly the same.
What is the weight of your ring?
Very, very nice find!

Re: First time out in about three weeks - gold ring! Need help with hallmark

Thanks for all of the replies everybody! Well, this is definitely a first for me - never found a 24K gold ring before. Highest has been 18K.

Although it is small, and most likely a child's ring, it does have nice heft to it, and weighs in at .265 ounces, so worth about $240 based on yesterday's spot price of gold.

I'm even more excited about it as I've been detecting these campgrounds for about 8 months now, and after over a dozen rings have been pulled out of there, this is the first gold item found.

And I found it because I decided, after getting back to my car, to take one walk through a big open field to the other side and back before leaving for the day. Funny how that always seems to work - detecting on the way back to the car, or giving yourself 15 extra minutes even though you are already up against your deadline. Just follow your gut and your instincts, and you'll eventually be led over treasure.

Happy Hunting,

Jim

Thanks Dan. Yeah, I don't know what happened - my wife was out of town for 11 days, and I was planning to get out every day she was gone. But between taking care of two kids and a week of rain, I only got out once. I'm so glad I decided to go yesterday for a couple hours - that 24k ring has really inspired me to get out again real soon.

Jim
