Does anyone like catching BIG Groupers? We were anchored up at the "Ridge" off southern Baja waiting for some tide to go Wahoo fishing. While waiting, I decided to drop in a dropper loop with a 5 pound Skipjack for bait. I had a 5-1/2' Calstar heavy rod, and a Penn 30SW with 60lb line that I normally use for Yellowfin Tuna fishing. Even with this setup, I was VERY lucky to land this beast. He ran into the rocks numerous times and the line was so frayed I really couldn't believe that it didn't break. He fought like hell, but I got him, and was one of the best tasting fish I have ever caught. The flesh was light, firm, and reminded me of crabmeat. Sweet and delicious.

We love grouper fishing !! That's a great fish coin hunter. Our season opened may 1st, unfortunately we have been working on the boats and have not fished them yet this season. We will fish for them on June 6 for a few days. Congrats on a beautiful grouper. Its amazing how many long lost friends will show up at the door when you have grouper fillets !!

Thanks! It was quite an unexpected surprise. Next time I try that though, I'll use my 100 pound setup, I'm lucky to have landed him. The bottom structure there is very rocky with lots of pinnacles and caves, etc. I could feel him going into the rocks.

OK, enough of the saltwater stuff...How about trout fishing? Lee's Ferry is just below Lake Powell, where the water is released it's the very beginning of the Grand Canyon. It's a very beautiful spot to fish. Click to enlarge photo.

We used to fish for Carp down in the lower Colorado River down by Yuma, AZ. We used doughballs for bait. We would set our rods in our rod holders, and can remember losing a fishing pole to one of those boogers pulling it out of the holder and taking off with it. I quickly learned to tie the rod to a willow bush so I wouldn't lose it!

Best be using a bait runner cause once they feel resistance they take off like a bullet...so will your rod.I forgot to hit the lever once and lucky enough to be close enough to grab my rod.
