I was out detecting in the woods behind an house built in 1740
next to an old stone wall i got this quick tone on my idx but it
only hit while i was moving the coil fast but read as copper so i
dug on it and this is what came out im not sure if its actually colonial
but there is no visible backmark and a small bit of gilt is still visible on
the front but its my first button and im happy with it. Any help on its
age would be greatly appreciated

Its more likely to be post 1800 than pre 1800 so its just outside of the colonial period (If I understand US history enough). circa 1820.

I bet if you clean that one up you'll find a backmark. I would agree that 1820 would be a good round about date.

A nice early button. It dates about 1820 like others have said. It's kind of hard to tell fron the pics but it looks like it has the kind of crud that will flake off once it is dry. If this is the case the best thing to do it let it dry and flick the crust off with your finger nail or a toothpick.
