Actually electric cars are more efficient than any current gas, diesel or hybrid powertrain in use now. The level of efficiency can be up in the 70% range if your electricity comes from solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, or nuclear energy. If the electrical energy comes from burning fossil fuels like coal the margin of efficiency above a hybrid gas/electric car is only slightly higher, but your emissions is worse because you have shifted your car's exhaust to the power companies smoke stack which is not nearly as clean as the average car that is a 2000 model year or newer. The current emissions on 2008-2009 model year cars are almost nonexistent.
