My guess is the "flute" you see is just a large flake that was removed when the tip broke off the piece. I have a few that look just like that and I even have a Dovetail that had an impact fracture that put a "flute" like that coming up from the tip and the they reworked it back into a sharp tip leaving part of the impact "flute" still visible.

This is the point on the right in this picture. It doesn't show real well in the pic, but you can see the impact fracture "flute" coming up from the tip and see where it was rechipped into a point.
