Found this poem in this month's "Royal Marines Association Magazine", change Royal for U.S. and it covers both sides of the pond.
"An Ode To A Royal Marine"
Out in the sands of The desert,
Where nary a matelot has been,
Where many a shifting sand
dune marks
The grave of a Royal Marine.
Up in the Arctic regions,
Where nary a pongo has been,
There's many a mighty iceberg
Marks the grave of a Royal Marine
Out in the China Station,
Where nary an airman has been,
There's many a Chinese maiden,
Mourns for a Royal Marine.
And in the green fetid depths of
the jungle,
Where many have never been,
The green shady fronds of a
Palm tree
Shades a grave of a Royal Marine.
So remember all you have journeyed
Think of the sights you have seen,
For wherever gods finger touches,
Marks the grave of a Royal Marine.
Best wishes from a former "Royal"
Good detecting in the New Year
