A topo map I viewed named a nearby island as "Race Track" island. Just to the upstream side of the island is a curve that would almost certainly form an eddy as the river split to each side of the island. As rivers change course from time to time, it is possible that the cannons aren't even under water anymore.

Nice clippings. I lived in Sunbury for several years about two blocks from the river. I never heard of this. The year I moved to WV june of 2005, they were doing a dig right at the Historical societys property which is the former site of Fort Augusta.
I have detected around Sunbury ut found nothing of value. I did find a few stone artifacts from Indians along the river bank before and after they lowered the inflatable dam along with a lot of trash.
