I went hunting for about a hour this morning to a spot on the Ohio River I used to hunt years ago but haven't been to in a long time. The place I used to get down to the bank had lost it's staircase about 8 years ago and the bank was so grown up you couldn't get down, but I drove on down past that spot and found a house that had stairs down to the bank and they told me I could use them any time I wanted. I wish I had taken my camera, but I didn't and I regret it since I could have gotten a nice in situ picture.

This is the first Hard Stone Chisel I have ever found and man is it a dandy. It is pecked on about 7/8's of it's length and has great polish on the bit. There is some polish along the entire length and it is very smooth, but you can still see the peck marks on it. It is 5 1/4 inches long by 1 3/8 inches wide and it looks to be made of a dark blue Granite. I was hoping it was black Diorite when I first saw it because it looked black in the water, but it's not. It has just a little bit of recent damage on the poll end probably from banging the other rocks along the banks of the river.

Here's some pictures. I took a few inside and a few outside in the sunlight.

I haven't looked much in the last couple years, but I think this may inspire me. Wow. I need one of those...

Yeah stopped by to congratulate you again. As much as you find you should not be allowed near a site without a camera, lol. Nice find on an old hunting spot.

Re: Found A Killer Today

Greg and TN, I usually take my camera, but when I found that piece I was actually just scouting to find a new way to get down to the river bank since the staircase I always used before got washed away a while back. I stopped to ask a guy about using his stairs behind his house and ended up being a guy I went to school with, so after getting permission I thought I'd walk down and see how the river looked. I didn't go more the 50 yards when I spotted this in the river and I immediately went back up to the car and left. Paleojoe and I went back today and didn't find much at all other than a little crude point I found that wasn't even worth a picture. We will hit it again after a good rain though and see if anything comes out.

I took some new pictures after rubbing this Chisel with my skin oils and you can see how black it is now. It's amazing how much the color changed on this piece after rubbing it down. I am completely convinced it's Diorite now and not Granite like I thought.
