Found this little gem in the wall of an old house today. Strangely it's the first saloon token I've found down here. I tried to find some info on the place, but haven't turned anything up just yet. If anyone has any info on it, I'd love to know more. Especially an age range on it. It's from the "Riflemen's Cafe and Oyster Saloon" which I have never heard of, but it sounds like an interesting place.

I agree, pretty cool

Hey that's a pretty cool token!

Steve

I'll give you some starting dates:
The oldest oyster bar (saloon) in the United States opened in 1826. (Boston)
The oldest restaurant in New Orleans is Antione's (Est 1840)
Yet, La Mothe's Rest. and Oyster Saloon at 137 Charles St. claimed (in 1892) to be NO's oldest restaurant.
Anyway, if you found it in the NO area, chances are high that your token was made after 1840.
Don....
Don..

If that token was in the wall; i'm betting you'll find more!!!! Good luck!

Love the token. I don't think peroxide would be the best method that works better on coins that we're underground. If it was mine I would soak it in olive oil

Love old tokens...Rifle men's cafe? And oysters? That is one awesome find! Got to love a fat sloppy oyster with yer whiskey! Good luck getting a reference...

Very neat. I considering myself pretty good at researching these-- and there is Zip Zero Zilch on this one so far. Maybe it had it's grand opening and burned down the next day.

Yeah, I've tried pretty much every reference I can find locally and still nothing.... A friend suggested earlier that the place may actually have been in Chalmette near the battlefield and that Riflemen could be in reference to the Kentucky and Tennessee Riflemen who fought there.... Seems like a possibility to explore...

Any idea what kind of value something like this would have? I'm not really thinking about parting with it, but it would be interesting to know
