Found at civil war camp...

I found this in a civil war camp that my brother had dug four plates in the last month. I hope someone can help me ID it. It seems that something else was attached to it at one time. Any information would be greatly appreciated....

Is it iron or lead? the reason I ask 90% of the cw lead we dig down here has a brown patina on it like that

CW, It's iron and it's heavy. I kinda like Mike's suggestion about the bell but it would've been a pretty big bell. I should weigh it so you can see how heavy it is. Thanks for your help...

It actually looks to be the right size for cannister shot and cannister was cast iron.
